Once You Start Visiting a Chiropractor, do You Need Adjustments Forever?

Once You Start Visiting a Chiropractor, do You Need Adjustments Forever

One of the biggest, most exaggerated myths about going to the chiropractor is that once you start going, you need to go forever. Some people believe that if they stop getting adjusted, their spine will suddenly revert back to a state of disrepair and they’ll fall down a rabbit hole of pain, discomfort, and crippling mobility.

This just isn’t the case.

Chiropractic is about getting your spine back into alignment, then helping you develop the good habits to keep it there. While we love our Las Vegas, NV patients, Advanced Spine and Posture loves it even more when we can wave goodbye, knowing your spine is in good health and that you have the tools to keep it that way!

The stages of chiropractic

Chiropractic care actually occurs in stages, designed to slowly wean you down until you no longer need it.

Diagnosis and initial treatment planning

Take something like chronic back pain, caused by a slipped disc. You’ll visit the chiropractor for a consultation, where you’ll receive a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Most Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) treatment schedules span a predetermined number of visits based on the nature and severity of the condition. Let’s say 12, for the purposes of this example.

The adjustment schedule

Over the course of your adjustment schedule, a chiropractor will adjust your spine back to an acceptable degree. They’ll also provide exercises, postural advice, dietary insight, and more to improve the efficacy of these adjustments.

Post-adjustment schedule

Provided the treatment schedule was effective, your 12-week transition back to proper spine health will be complete. Your chiropractor may recommend 3-5 more appointments spaced out over the course of several months, as a form of maintenance. After that, you may visit the chiropractor as-needed, depending on how your body responds to certain stressors or acute incidents.

Breaking the myth of ongoing visits

The myth of “chiropractic forever” comes from the prolonged adjustment schedules many people need. For example, a 24-week adjustment schedule can turn into a longer timeline for many reasons.

A patient may neglect to adopt posture changes, forcing their spine back out of alignment. An accident like a car crash may set the adjustment schedule back. The progress of adjustments may not be as quick as originally anticipated, requiring a new timetable. These things are all possible and will all shift the recovery timeline of a chiropractic patient.

It’s important to realize that even with setbacks and extended adjustment schedules, the need for chiropractic isn’t forever. That said, many people choose to continue seeing a chiropractor after their adjustment schedule is complete because they see it as a holistic form of self-care.

Recovery vs. management

People see a chiropractor for different reasons. For acute back pain, you might only see the chiropractor until it’s gone and your quality of life has normalized. For someone living with degenerative disc disease or a chronic arthritis condition, chiropractic may be a source of pain management.

Chiropractic care isn’t a trap meant to keep you coming back for decades. It’s a holistic approach to realignment and wellness. How long you visit depends on your condition, progression, and how you feel. Rest assured, every adjustment is meant to put you one step closer to not needing another one!
