What Is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the long ligament along the bottom of the foot becomes torn or inflamed. This happens when abnormal movement of the foot puts stress on the plantar fascia, which runs from the heel to the toe. One common cause is pronation of the foot, or when the foot moves at an inward angle when striking the ground.

This condition is common for runners or athletes who demand a lot from their bodies. It’s also common for those working in manual labor who often lift heavy loads. Anybody who is putting significant stress on their feet is at risk for this condition.

Other factors associated with plantar fasciitis are having high arches or being overweight. It is the most common cause of heel pain, and it affects people ages 40 to 70 the most.

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis

Cases of acute plantar fasciitis can be debilitating. Sufferers of this condition typically have some of the following symptoms:

  • Dull ache or sharp pain on the bottom of the foot;
  • Heel pain;
  • Inability to run or walk.

Sufferers typically have pain after a long period of immobility, such as after they wake up. This is because the ligament needs to be “loosened up” for the pain to dissipate. In most cases, only one foot is affected. The pain ranges from mild to intense discomfort.

Treatments for plantar fasciitis

Doctors recommend a variety of treatments depending on the severity of the condition. It’s important to note that there’s no “cure” for plantar fasciitis. Rather, it’s a condition that can be managed through a combination of treatments.

For minor cases, medical professionals typically will recommend taking a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or naproxen. For serious cases, steroid injections are required to minimize pain. These medications reduce the inflammation of the ligament. It’s very important to note that medicating does nothing to resolve the condition, however, only make it more manageable while you stretch and finesse your ligament back into condition.

Chiropractic care for plantar fasciitis

Chiropractors provide stretches, manual adjustments and therapeutic exercises. These treat the condition by strengthening the foot’s soft tissue. They are particularly effective when combined with medication and reduced stress on the feet. Often it takes months for plantar fasciitis patients’ condition to improve, however chiropractic care can induce marked improvements if incorporated into a regimen of care.

Chiropractors often also recommend changing exercise routines to riding a stationary bike or walking. These activities put less stress on the ligament.
